Polona, this Haiku really gave me pause!

Ok,so,follow me on this...

In the picture, the snow looks like a pile of dirty laundry. The use of the word "dirty" and "shrinks" only reinforces my sneaking suspicion that you are drawing the idea of laundry and snow together.

But what's with "winter thunder"? Were you referring to the sound the car makes when driving through a puddle of water? - shrinking the pile of snow as it splashes it?

Or winter thunder could simply refer to the phenomena of thunder in winter, which is unusual and usually means rain rather than snow. But what's with the careful photo of the car and why the seeming allusions to laundry?

Then I remembered! There's a product for laundry called "White Lightning". It's a Liquid Oxygen Bleach for Laundry (it's color safe). What comes after lightning? Thunder. In this case, the splash of water on the snow (linen) is having the opposite effect. It's making the pile of snow dirtier, but also making it disappear.

I love it.

To me, that snow looks like a pile of ice cream :)

I see just dirty snow that is shrinking due to the rain (thunder). Although thunder is unheard in these parts (N. Canada) from about Oct-Mar, apparently it isn't so uncommon in Slovenia.

We get the rain (and thunder even in winter) but not the snow but this certainly gives one an awesome image Polona.

thank you all. well, after we got some snow on the friday night, it started to rain and hasn't stopped since. and yes, we did have a thunderstorm which is not very common this time of year although it can happen occasionally.

just saw your photo, devika, and you are a beautiful woman. you can't have changed much in a few years, no? ;) and that's how the piles of snow ploughed away from the road looks...

@upinermont: wow! you really did take your time analysing this haiga :))
actually, i got the idea for the haiku on my way from work. it was already dark and if i wanted a photo to accompany the words i just had to take what i could get - and that was a pile of snow under a street lamp with a car nearby, which i snapped. the quality of the photo is poor but the effect seemed to work with the words.
the idea of 'dirty laundry' did occur to me later on, but by no means in such an elaborate way.

I don't even like looking at that remnant of snow! It brings back horrors of shoveling snow endlessly all winter long ... 12 years and I have yet to forget having to shovel the sidewalk and driveway sometimes 3 times a day!

Do you have any snow left today?

Our own snow turned to rain during the middle of the night, about the same time as you wrote your haiku.

We still have some snow left - the days have been cold.

I like the way you've contrasted these things, the noisy and the silent, the sky and the ground. And the way it suggests the snow is almost a little scared of the thunder.

a far different photo than you usually show here- I don't like dirty snow.

Like the phrase "winter thunder" and that its rain could shrink the dirty snow! Smart poet :)

Does the snow know its days are numbered?
