well, the moon is round, and the ball is round. while the moon goes up, the ball goes down... the dog is there for a bit of surprise (you wouldn't expect a tennis ball during the Wimbledon tournament to be a toy), and because they generally like engaging their owners in a bit of ball play ;-)
